4% of Online American Adults use Location-Based Services

If I’m following here, this article and study used the term “location based services” narrowly — merely checkins via Foursquare, Gowalla, Facebook, etc.

The real value of location based services is in local search specifically with applications like Around Me and Yelp. I think of location based services as providing ambient information about what is going on in your immediate surroundings.

When somebody broadcasts their whereabouts I’m concerned less with that fact that they are there and more as a way to discover new places I may not have previously known about. This is much more valuable than the checkin which is just a facebook status update or tweet by another name.
